Museos

Museo Hispano y Latinoamericano de Florida http://www.latinoweb.com/museo/museo.htm. Eleven rotating exhibits per year. Free opening night and cocktail reception, 2nd Friday of each month.

Miami Art Museum (MAM) - designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson, MAM collects, exhibits, presents and interprets international art, with a focus on post-World War II works of the western hemisphere.

Historical Museum of Southern Florida: http://www.historical-museum.org/ - 10,000 years of Florida's cultural and natural history are explored in this museums exhibits and collections. Collections include John Jay Audubon's famed Birds of America and postcards of 19th century Cubans, as well as contemporary exhibits of Florida culture, including Nicaraguan culture and Afro-Cuban Orisha arts. Also offers historic tours.

Lowe Museum, University of Miami, Coral Gables
European and American painting and sculpture collections from antiquities to the present. Hosts the annual Beaux Arts Festival, a juried international art show with $20,000 in prizes.

The Holocaust Memorial - Museum commemorating the WW2 Holocaust. Meditation garden, emotionally moving sculptures and photos.

Visitors are welcome to check out the studios in this funky artists' building off Washington Avenue. Group shows and individual artist's installations are hung in the lobby.

Historical Landmarks

Freedom Tower (1925) "Ellis Island of the South": processed almost half a million Cuban refugees in the early 1960's. One of two surviving bell towers (the other is on top of the Biltmore Hotel) modeled after the Giralda bell tower at Spain's Cathedral of Seville.
